Keep them glued; don’t look up! Dear God, please don’t say anything, this is so embarrassing, just please don’t look up.

As a young teenager, I was obsessed with glamour and sophistication. No one else in my year at school had even heard of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and I could practically recite the script. So, the summer before Year Ten; crippled with the stress of finishing SATs, end-of-year examinations and the impending doom of GCSEs, my mum decided to book us tickets on the Eurostar to Paris; the proverbial cherry on top of the delicious sundae that is the fashion world.

I was allowed to pick out a brand new holiday outfit and I spent the stretched out, long summer days leading up to our departure dreaming of streets filled with authentic Parisian café, stalls filled with miniature Eiffel Tower figurines and colour faded postcards and the elaborate window displays of the Holy Trinity: Chanel, Dior and Galliano. Hmm, naïve.

What greeted my innocent eyes instead were streets lined with sex shops, seedy strip joints and the occasional shop front plastered with neon “Peep Show – Girls Girls Girls!” signs, blinking offensively at the hunched tourists scuttling past. I was aware that Paris was the city of love, but this was just ridiculous.

And the trip was off to such a good start too; my mum, ever the flatterer, managed to score a last minute upgrade to first class on the Eurostar. A smile crept across my face as I stared out of the train window, daydreaming about being a rich socialite off to crash at her chic flat in the heart of Paris, whilst trying to decide whether I wanted the fish or the chicken for lunch…

The actual arrival was slightly less magical. As an awkward fourteen year old, full of crippling self awareness, sitting in a café with my mum, munching on cheese toasties, face with a giant sex emporium opposite the street was more than a little surreal. It was embarrassing. At that age, sex was something you giggled about with your friends, not something you openly acknowledged in front of your mother.

Going to an all girls grammar school and not really interacting with any boys, I had never really had to acknowledge my sexuality, and now here it was right in front of me; flashing neon and wearing nipple tassels.

The climax of the trip was definitely going to the Moulin Rouge. Wearing my new black Miss Selfridge dress and applying some pearly, shimmery, pale pink-whatever shade Rimmel eye shadow on my eager eyes, this was my first brush with glamour. Here I was in what was quintessentially Fashion Land, in my very own Little Black Dress, off to the Moulin Rouge. The Moulin Rouge.

Unfortunately again, my insecure teenage would once again get the better of me. Foolishly enough I hadn’t twigged that a renowned home of burlesque might contain a smidge of nudity. Once again, there I was; eyes on the floor, completely horrified at the fact that I was sharing the sight of a near naked dancer with my mother.

As a (somewhat) mature adult now, this saddens me. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I spent most of it staring at the pavement. Why was I so embarrassed?

At school, I was taught to death about just exactly how girls “develop” into women; menstruation this, hormones that, but whilst adults are only to keen to describe the physical transaction, no one really says how you start to think, start to behave as a woman.

To be confronted so blatantly was surreal. With a capital S. To see huge photos plastered on the sides of buildings of bouffanted women with only their hands and skimpy lingerie to cover their modesty was confusing to me. Is this what women are supposed to be like? Is this how all men saw us? Is this what I was supposed to aspire to become?

On the surface, Paris was an immensely fun, completely embarrassing trip, but I really think it left a deep impact on me. It was the first time I really thought about what kind of woman I wanted to be; did I want to be the woman men stared open mouthed at, fantasized about? It confronted me with just how I felt about this raunchy, naughty culture and ultimately how I though about sex and what it meant to be a woman, not just a girl.

I may have still been a girl when I left, but I darn well left a little more aware and a little less naïve. Not bad for £59 return.

XOXO

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cupcakesandyellownailpolish.blogspot.com/2009/03/couchez-avec-moi-non-non-monsieur.html' title='Couchez avec moi? I always get run down round about major coursework deadlines, so I was expecting this and I came prepared! I've been feasting on those yummy chewable orange vitamins in the hope that it might shorten my new found germ-breeding abilities by about a day or two. Cross your fingers for me.

No one likes being ill, me especially; I just sit in bed and think about all the other things I could be doing in my days home from school: I could be getting some revision done (yawn), doing my nails, going out shopping whilst there's no competition from other school-going girlies, altering the hemlines on a stack of dresses (damn my shortness!!), making cupcakes, tidying my room, going out to grab a drink from the cute little milkshake place I love, playing "If I had one million pounds to spend" game in Topshop....The list goes on. But instead, I'm stuck in bed. Grr.

So, not to be a grumpy Gus, I decided to think about nice things to make me happy, and I started thinking about all the magazine coverage about Barbie's 50th birthday. Say what you want about her being a negative role model, a fore figure for chauvinist ideals, a stupid blonde bimbo, but I'm crazy about Barbie. Originally created by Ruth Handler to satisfy her daughter's obsession with fashion models (thank you Nylon), Barbie has been the epitome of femininity and girlish kistch. Such a great way of getting girls involved with fashion and style at such a young age, and although let's face is; some of Barbie's outfits were a little tacky, it certainly gave me the inspiration to dress up and dress a little crazy every now and again.

Life In Plastic - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

So to hell with it, dig out your blue eyeshadow and your brightest pink lipstick, slip on those stiletto heels and pull on that pink tulle tutu. No amount of Touche Eclat can cover my panda-eyes, and I'm suddenly finding my English teacher's voice extremely soothing in class. I like a mess, and dude, there's a reason why it's called beauty sleep right?

So, no matter how urgent I need to finish an essay/e-mail someone class notes/straighten my hair (it's all about bed hair anyways!), I'm setting myself a strict 10pm bed time. No computer, television, phone, school work of any kind after that time; just me, tucked up in bed with my grey hoodie, my Breakfast at Tiffany's inspired eye mask (seriously - Claire's Accessories is a gold mine for deliciously kitsch things!)and a copy of the magazine du jour. A strict beauty regime is about due too; my negligence is playing havoc with my skin. I'm currently using the Neutrogena Stress Control range - the exfoliant is really gentle and smells really fresh, and I will be forever faithful to the Clinique dramatically different lotion. And therein lies the paradox...

Lalala - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

For me, I love slouchy jumpers at the moment because they manage to give a stylish and yet easy going, sloppy image, which for me is what I look for in summer clothes (and yet there still super snuggley!) I'm trying to hunt down a slouchy grey one; anyone got any suggestions? Thin knit jumpers are also good too, warm but a little lighter than the wool-so-thick-you-feel-like-you're-in-your-own-private-sauna jumpers. I got an amaazing deal at Primark on Saturday; a plum coloured v-neck light knit sweater, 4% cashmere for only £3!! Granted, I had to search for about an hour to find it and it was literally the only jumper on the whole table that was in my size, but jeez what a bargain! I bought some white tights a few weeks ago and I think they will go nice with this new jumper, with a black Dirndl skirt for a cute Alice in Wonderland look, so remind me to stay away from wondering rabbits.

I think neon and muted colours are definitely the way to go this spring; the combination of the two looks really fresh and very fashion forwards in my opinion. I'll be scouring the rails for some cute highlighter-coloured tshirts to revive my lagging wardrobe. I'm still on the mission to find an adorable LBD for upcoming summer parties: short, possibly strapless, flowy skirt and structured bodice with something quirky about it - PLEASE, does anyone know any good shops for this?!

If you help, I'll be your friend for life

XOXO

Yeah, That Looked Like Work

Oh.

My.

God.

No more textiles! - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

I am sooooooo glad that's over. Those were like the longest two weeks of my life!! I'm so glad that my life is my own again, it's no longer ruled my coursework! Luckily, I'm really good with deadlines but that also means that I'm the kinda person who will pull out all the stops to get something finished. Running up to the deadline of my textiles coursework, lets just say there were frequent late nights in front of the sewing machine, glugging diet coke to stay awake and watching old reruns of SATC for moral support. It's so tough to be a student...

The relief when I handed it in though was immense; I just sat there for about five minutes just going over in my head the fact that I will never have to do textiles coursework again: no more late nights in front of the sewing machine, no more mad rushes to Hobbycraft to buy more bias binding because I pissed my last reel all away, no more laborious risk assessments!! So, I just sat there with a smile on my face, nibbling away at my Weight Watchers toffee cookie (my sort of treat).

So now I'm just relaxing with my newest issue of Elle and looking forwards to making cookies with le boyfriend tomorrow. Breaths a sigh of relief

XOXO

I'm not an artard

Grrr, this week is a bad week for Ms M; too many deadlines and not enough hours in the day do not make for a happy chappy. I saw a pair of red Lolita style ones in Topshop for a snippy £15...and then saw a gorgeous pair of white ones in Primark for £1. I guess I need more bargain hunting help than I thought...
- To help me chill the heck out, le boyfriend and I have been having a cheeky little zombie-thons; from classic zombie films, to shitty remakes to my personal favourite Shaun of the Dead. I have been going slightly crazy, just ask my boyfriend, poor lamb.

But as a sorry present, I have finished my Vogue article, and I would be honoured for your critique (constructive critiscm please, no nasties)

And a big thank you for all your support so far; your comments all make me smile! I have set a goal to try to double my followers, so help out; tell a friend! Ms M lurrrves you all

XOXO

Smells Like A Nineties Revival

Exams. Complicated relationships. The competitiveness of the job world. The realization that one must have to substitute Agent Provocateur for Asda’s own-brand undies in order to survive on a student budget. It seems to me that being an adult is starting to consist more of being to (somewhat) walk in heels. Sometimes playing grown up is not fun

I guess things were just easier when you were a child. Going out to a restaurant meant picking the biggest, greasiest, cheesiest burger, eating the left over food off of everyone else’s’ plate and generally consuming more additives and artificial colourings than the Health Department’s “Ban List”. And now? It means asking the waitress “May I substitute the chips for a salad?” through clenched teeth and having a boyfriend trying to endlessly convince you that one of ice cream isn’t going to cause you to expand, balloon-like, out of your dress. Relationships were easier too; I’m sure my eight year old self never agonized over finding hidden meanings in texts. No, she was probably busy playing kiss chase in the school playground and slow dancing to Celene Dion at discos.

Heavyweight beauty brand MAC has also come over all nostalgic. They plan to unveil their new range of cosmetics in March, but they haven’t picked just anyone to collaborate with, oh no. Embossed in the powdered blushers and dancing around the lipstick tubes is none other than a certain mischievous, yet well accessorised cat, going by the name of Hello Kitty. I admit I have the release date circled in my diary; just the sight of Ms Kitty emblazoned onto a pot of pink nail polish brought me back to my unashamedly twee childhood days and brought a breath of fresh air into my somewhat stale adult life. It got me thinking too; how else could I find escapism in the 1990’s of my youth?

The nineties saw the rise of a brand new fashion clique; the sixties had mods, the eighties had punks and the nineties? We had grunge. To the untrained eye it simply meant resisting the urge to brush your hair, wash your clothes or wear clothes that fitted, but boy, was it more complicated than that. The irony lied in the fact that it took a lot of effort in order to get an outfit to say: “Yeah, I don’t care about what I wear, I just want to piss my parents off. Everything sucks.”

Granted, greasy hair and torn shorts are somewhat of a faux pas, but with some careful planning, the grunge look is still accessible. For me, the plaid checked shirt especially will always have an air of nonchalant sexuality. Underneath that somewhat masculine exterior, who knows one may find? A faded band t-shirt? A hint of black lingerie? If ever a garment could hold so much mystery, the checked shirt is it.
Grunge may not be the most colourful of all looks, so add interest with textured, ribbed tights, and thigh high socks give any outfit a little attitude. Show a brazen, new carefree attitude to feminism with a pinafore dress; simple, not too fussy and the type of thing you could wear out dancing to Backstreet Boys and vintage Britney Spears till midnight or staying in, Youtube-ing old episodes of Are You Afraid Of The Dark. Fill your I-pod with vintage Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and some Courtney Love (and please feel free to add a little smeared red lipstick now that you’re all grown up)

Most importantly for me, one of my most inspiration, most daring and delightful fashion icons was a spawn of the nineties; an adolescent Melissa Joan Hart in the Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All. Clarissa wore her clothes inside out. Clarissa wore scrunchies, Clarissa would layer her clothes like no tomorrow. Clarissa wore crop tops with high waisted jeans. Clarissa. Was. Awesome. At nine years old, sitting in front of the TV, Clarissa showed me just how being fearless with fashion can immensely pay off with one kick ass original outfit. It seems taking fashion risks were easier when you were younger, before crippling self-insecurities kicked in, but if we could all revert back to our pre-pubescent mindset then the world of street style would be a much brighter, more interesting place. Why not wear a nightdress with combat boots? Who says that neon eyeliner can’t be worn during the day? If the nineties taught me anything, it was that there are no rules in fashion. And yes, the 90’s were a tad tacky and garish, but it laid the foundation of my fashion identity. I could learn a lot from my eight year old self; and her pink leopard print leggings.

So yeah, let’s never grow up. Ever.

Born In the 90's - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

Thrifting Survival Kit

There's nothing I love more in this life than a good day's thrifting; searching through dusty rails of even dustier clothes and unearthing that single, special, one-of-a-kind piece and realising that you can have it for mere peanuts. I celebrate it like a complete nerd; I make heart shaped cookies, add red food colouring to everything I cook, wear pink nails, blow my money on the sexiest lingerie and indulge myself in as many rom coms as my stomach can physically handle (there's only so many times you can watch Pretty Woman in a row)

But lots of people say that Valentines is a sham, created by Hallmark, that its stupid and childish; and to those people I say loud and clear "Get a life", but there is one thing that I do agree with - you shouldn't limit Valentines to just one day! Here are my tips on making Valentines day last all year round:

- You never ever need a reason to bake heart shaped cookies
- Ditto spending insane amounts of money in Ann Summers
- Loveheart sweets are the perfect silly little gift to let a partner or friend know that you're thinking about them
- Scour the Internet for ideas for perfect romantic dates
- Buy red roses...for yourself
- Pink fluffy handcuffs look great as a decorative feature hanging on a bedroom wall; sexy and tongue in cheek!
- Writing cute little love notes to boyfriends, friends, family,...strangers....
- Buy as much pink crap as you can: earrings, nail polishes, Post-its, folders, lipsticks, toothbrushes, highlighters, cupcakes, umbrellas, ANYTHING!
- Two words: Dirty. Dancing

So get romantic!

XOXO

-

Lions and Tigers and Scares, OH MY!

I am so excited about tomorrow. Completely, utterly and insanely knackered. I don't do sleeping on planes (I'm a self confessed sleep-drooler, public sleeping = definite no no) so I am suffering from the inevitable holiday fatigue.

Milan! - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

Milan was not all I thought it was going to be. A little bit grotty, a little bit dirty and definitely not as vibrant as my beloved London; for a supposed fashion capital of the world the people sure played it safe, fashion wise! I was expected a little more luxury, a little more creative; oh well, I'll just blame the rain!

Being the hardcore fashion mistress that I am, a stroll around the Milan boutiques was a must, and it truly was heaven on toast though; some people say it's torture to riffle through clothes that you will probably never be able to afford but its an aspiration for me, a goal, if you will... And couture is so pretty! Chanel was definitely the most significant shop for me, because I am a die hard Coco fan (complete and utter legend)and Dior was amazing (I saw a flash of red gingham there, an up coming summer trend perhaps?) I was actually surprised at how friendly the shop assistants were, none of them scowled at a young (slightly tatty) 18 year old girl wandering the rails with no obvious method of payment. There were very friendly and made me fall just that little bit more in love with high fashion.

Obviously I didn't come home with a new Chanel handbag or Versace ball gown, but Ms M's funds did manage to stretch to... a little Agent Provocateur lingerie. That's right, Ms M...is now an AP girl! I swear to god, I was practically trembling when the shop assistant handed over the shiny pink paper bag to me, is that a little strange?! But I am the biggest Agent Provocateur fan and to be able to own one of their pieces, to be able to put it on and call myself and AP girl; a dream come true. I love Agent Provocateur for many, many a reason, the main of which is the fact that they make it okay to be sexy; it has the message that it's not about fulfilling a man's fantasy but your own. It's about the fantasy, turning sex into a performance and offering escapism into this glamorous world where you are the headline star. Every girl deserves to feel like a burlesque sex pot at one point in her life.

Another amazing highlight was going to see Da Vinci's Last Supper. It. Was. HUGE! A mural covering a whole wall, it was breath-takingly intricate. I was actually pretty emotional at the thought of being so connected with such an iconic item of history; I was looking at something that was once touched by Mr Leonardo himself. Call me a nerd, but don't you think that's just a little bit amazing?!

The greatest thing about holidays though is coming home and realising how much you missed it. England, I do love you so.

And unfortunetly, because Ms M is known for her clumsiness, she was not trusted with a digital camera so had to make do with disposable ones :(

Will try to scan the photos in once they're developed!

And yeah, and in Italian Vogue, Daisy Lowe spread galooore; Gracias!

XOXO

Mambo Italiano

Well babes, Ms M is off to snowy Milan for five or so days; sightseeing, shopping, drooling outside the Miu Miu shop front (because I have no shame) and expect big write ups when I get back!

So be a doll and leave me some lovely comments to read when I get back, and as a parting present to you, I leave you with my latest creation

Ms M February - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

It's official. I admit it; I'm a Bugsy Malone obsessed freak (and yes I do own the special edition "sing-a-long" DVD...)

But seriously, this film is an untapped fashion goldmine! My full respect to the costume designer because those barely teenaged girls seemed to possess more pulled together looks and a ton more femininity than I currently can boast of.

To anyone too lazy to watch it (shame on you!), I'll fill you in on Bugsy Malone Fashion 101.

Bugsy Malone - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

Set in the twenties, the fashion is all about luxury; whether its adorning your dressing table with ornate perfume bottles or splurging out on an envy-inducing compact. Grooming is essential in order to pull this look together so greasy unstyled hair and an un-made up face are big no nos; take time with your makeup in the morning and there is no greater sin than chipped nail polish (did you see Tallulah with chipped nail polish?! No?! Well there you go!) and remember nothing says flapper glamour more than excusing yourself to go powder your nose.

There are no bright, neon nu rave colours in the film so rock out instead with delicate creams, powdered blues, purples, pinks and pillar box red and match the delicate colour scheme with delicate fabrics. Hell to wash, but heaven to wear; chiffon, silks, satins and beaded details should all find ways to your wardrobe. Search vintage shops high and low for some authentic twenties jewelery, or scour the high street for some pendant drop earrings, cocktail rings and pearl necklaces (Topshop are dynamite for retro jewelry with a twist)

Hollywood star wannabe Blousey Brown wouldn't be caught dead without her heels, and neither should you; either work a basic black heel or a fabulously ornate and OTT heel (and perhaps some feet cushion pads for the heel backlash?)

It never hurt anyone to inject a little glamour into their wardrobes; even the most hardened of tomboys could work a little silk lingerie into their look, peeping stealthily out of their battered Levi's

XOXO

How To...Relive The 90's

Is it just me, or did everything seemed better when you were a child? For example, takeaways meant instant happiness instead of binging and later agonising about pockets of cellulite that you swore weren't there before; a long term relationship back then meant going out with a boy for a whole a week after you danced with him at the school disco; and of course it was the decade of some of the greatest television (Sabrina the Teenage Witch anyone?!) Even my packed lunch was better a decade ago, so last Friday me and some friends decided to have a 90's lunch picnic; a feast of pickled onion Monster Munch, Cheesestrings, pink wafers, Dairylea stackables and more additives and E numbers than an FDA's ban list.

Although my 90's throwback lunch caused some serious hyperactivity and a hideous sugar crash mid afternoon (sugar withdrawal may be even worse than PMS), it got me thinking about other ways in which to bring the 90's back into your everyday life and ways in which to convince yourself that your childhood isn't quite over yet:

-Watch Clueless five times in a row whilst devouring a tub of anything Ben&Jerry's
-Seven syllables: Clarissa Explains It All - a young Melissa Joan Hart was responsible for some of my most crazy and creative outfits of my eight year old wardrobe
-Embrace the grunge look with flannel plaid shirts, ribbed thigh high socks, pinafore dresses and fill your Ipod with vintage Nirvanna, Smashing Pumpkins and a bit of Courtney Love (and feel free to add a little smeared red lipstick now that you're all grown up)
-Youtube vintage episodes of Are You Afraid Of The Dark
-Scour Claire's Accessories for cheap and cheerfully kitsch earrings, necklaces and rings (extra points if you find pink fluffy hairbands a` la Britney Spears circa Hit Me Baby)

Born In the 90's - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

Maybe its best to just skip over the whole Pokemon trend though...

XOXO

AWOL Boyfriend Survival Kit

So Le boyfriend has left me. I'd forgotten how stressful the whole exam process is - making sure all my pens worked, finding out where I was sitting, what my candidate number was, last minute cramming, trying to find a suitable exam outfit (unfortunately I opted to wear a cute, but slightly itchy embroidered black dress...bad move...), but I am oh so glad it's over!

And as promised, le boyfriend treated me to dinner and a movie so it was a very well-spent evening! I wore a cute little floral dress, grey cardigan, gold necklace and heavy eyeliner (very Daisy Lowe) We went to my favourite Mexican restaurant, where we talked, laughed and stuffed our faces and praised the quick service. Being a newly-turned 18 year old, I excitedly brought my I.D so that I could have my very first legal drink (buying a bottle of cherry Lambrini in the corner shop doesn't count...), but would you believe it, nobody asked for it! I swear, now that I'm eighteen I don't get I.D'ed for anything!! It means freezing my bum off at the train station, the fear of slipping over on the ice and not being able to wear any of my cute clothes because i am forced to wear "sensible" shoes (aka shoes actually with grip on the bottom) and bulky layers so I don't freeze to death.

So, in order to kill off my Scrooge-ness, I decided to shop around for some cute (and sensible) winter-appropriate clothes

This not only looks warm, it's also a killer 80's throwback (adore!)

To help cure the case of the winter pasties

<a href="http://img604.imageshack.us/content.php?page=blogpost&files=img231/3137/tanno6.jpg" title=border="0">

This nubbly cardigan will look great with thick tights, a denim mini, a brightly coloured beret; whilst gentling nursing a giant steaming hot Starbucks latte

And this is a subtle hint to anyone wanting to run into my room at six in the morning, screaming "It's snowing!" The lingerie is so luxurious and extremely cheeky - it's the ultimate sexy/not trashy equation, and for that, I am completely obsessed (not to mention Daisy Lowe has front lined campaigns on more than one occasion)

But the most intriguing thing about AP are the AP girls; the characters behind the lingerie. Each collection has a story which are normally told through a mixture of artistic film footage and kitsch drawings (big breasted, pink lipped, pouting comic goddesses. The AP girls capture the classic Bridgette Bardot sex-kitteness; youthful, flirtacious, a somewhat innocence masking an inner burlesque star. Its as easy as creating an account and following the instructions. There are tons of already available images to use for your collage, or you could use the Polyvore toolbar to import images from your favourite shop's websites.

Its a great way to try to spot themes in your new look (I think mine would be eccentric, 80's partyy girl brat...), thus using it as a spring board for other pieces to look out for when shopping. It makes you aware of what stuff you like, instead of shopping on auto-pilot, and it's a great thing to print out and stick in your wardrobe for inspiration.

So in the spirit of the new year, become a Polyvore-ette and makeover your look today!

XOXO

Coco Loco

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6smEEmgCn48/SVp1RTnm0nI/AAAAAAAAAAU/xK2bbyo_SyM/s200/chanel+blsuh.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285666052857320050" />
I did it.

I am now the proud, delighted owner of...a Chanel compact.

It's so shiny, and delicate; I feel scared to touch it.

Do you think parents go through these same emotions with newborns?!

I have wanted one for oh-so long, so whilst hitting the sales yesterday I figured with the money I saved buying reduced items I could afford to splurge - brilliant money management, oui?

The saleswoman picked me out a gorgeous soft pink blush (perfect for a porcelain princess like myself), so its always good to get in with the saleswoman if you want a shade guaranteed to flatter. Also, most of the time they are bored out their minds and are more than happy to tell you the lowdown on what will work.

Not only is it a gorgeous makeup staple and one heck of a classic and sophisticated compact, I love the fact that I can buy into the mystique of the renowned house of Chanel without having to drop hundreds of thousands on a couture piece. Everytime I slip my new compact into my evening clutch or school bag, I'm carrying with me a piece of fashion history.

Also, the last blusher compact I have lasted me for about four years, so this is one piece you can justify the price - its an investment!

XOXO

Image from www.metroactive.com

Pegasus Is Not A Unicorn

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6smEEmgCn48/SVp2QrttCpI/AAAAAAAAAAc/oB3F2mVUoyk/s200/boingboing.com" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285667141657102994" />

Not strictly a style icon, but I'm letting my inner 8 year old free and indulging in all things unicorn! And guess what? I just got the call.

It's great to have that friend who you will always have fun with - whether you're staying in having a SATC marathon (we were way too tired to go out) or dancing until three in the morning and then walking four hours to ASDA. It's that one friend who makes you feel like such a hardcore party animal, and the one who will drag you to the parties that will create the most Myspace-worthy photos.

It also means that I can pull things from the more trashier side of my wardrobe (not slutty; just messy, clumsy, thrown together outfits) and wear my nu-rave rosary and rip holes in my tights deliberately and wear way too much eyeliner. It's no fun going out if you're completely polished, when you're young you can pull off completely outrageous crazy shit. Give That Special Someone A Gift On The Cheap!

I love getting into the Christmasy spirit of things, and have consequently spent the weekend eating chocolate coins (how impressively kitsch), making paper chains from torn up, ancient Elle magazines and watching the South Park Christmas specials. Aaah, its good to be festive!

One other thing that really gets me into the festive mood is coming up with a great idea of a present for someone. Me and my boyfriend have been going out together for over fifteen months, so we have an impressive vault of memories together - so why not make a soundtrack to our relationship?! From the song playing when we first met, to the songs we hated, ones we obsessed about, artists we saw in concert and even the theme song to the show we were watching when we first had sex (it was a season 1 Friends repeat on E4...) It's a cheap, easy, extremely thoughtful and cute gift to give this Christmas, especially when completed with album artwork (i.e. cute couple picture collage), so if you're stuck for ideas, head straight to the iTunes store...

XOXO

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cupcakesandyellownailpolish.blogspot.com/2008/12/ooh-weather-outside-is-weather.html' title='How To... Would I get ID-ed? Would people stare at me? Would I have enough courage to actually buy anything? The walk up to the shop was nerve-recking; but I am a big girl, a big girl who needs some sexy-ass lingerie for a Christmas surprise for her boyfriend (who had been a very good boy this year)

Once I was in however, I found my Mecca. It was amazing - I was surrounded by gorgeously pretty lingerie, kinky PVC numbers, furry fans, handcuffs, all sorts of tongue in cheek novelties and a general air of seduction. Everything was clearly laid out, with buckets of sexy accessories dotted around the shop (so organised!) so if one was completely scared by the experience then they could just go in, grab and leave super easily. Fortunately, I had gained enough courage to allow myself a decent look around.

With underwear named after the most amazing burlesque lady in the world (Yes, I now own a pair of "Dita" pants), sparkly nipple tassels and anything you could ever want to spice up a relationship, I was completely inspired. Sex is so fun, so why not try something different?! It's no longer seedy to visit shops like Ann Summers - all sorts of people from young couples to middle aged women and big burly bikers in there, and I definitely did not feel intimidated. A little spice in your life never hurt anyone, and every girl deserves to feel like a burlesque superstar at one point in her life - so bite the bullet, drop into your local Ann Summers, and pick up a gorgeous baby doll (if you're playing it safe) or a full on PVC, wipe clean corset (extra point if you get the matching restraints)

Oh la la - by Ms M on Polyvore.com

XOXO

Androgynous , Metrosexual, Omnisexual - Lets Not Get Into Semantics

One of the best things about having a boyfriend? Having a second wardrobe to riffle through of course!

During these times of crappy economy, it's always good to find ways in which to curb excess spending, so extra clothes are never a bad thing. I'm very into mixing, so mixing manly man clothes with super feminine accessories is a look I am so into right now. An oversized jumper always looks cute with a frayed denim mini and thick black tights (practical for the chilly months ahead!) and baggy graphic t-shirts look dynamite with lady like pearls and delicate golden pendants, or layered under a strappy summer dress (also very into layering too...)

So next time you're round your boyfriend's house, sail past the bed and aim for the wardrobe - that's where the real goodies are ;)

XOXO

Clothes Show LIIIVE!

Today was an AMAZING day! How my school managed to pass off going to the Clothes Show in the Birmingham NEC as an educational trip I will never know...but, it was amazing. I got some dynamite bargains:

- Three Lady Luck necklaces for £15! Precious little vinyl necklaces in quirky shapes;guaranteed to add a little dynamite to any outfit
- Three Junk Food t-shirts for £15; retro-y t shirts in powdery shades; killer with smudged eyeliner and tousled hair
- I also got a cute Hello Kitty purse (the stitching is disgusting, but who can argue with Ms Kitty?) and a gorgeous sugar lip scrub (when I found out it was edible I almost creamed myself - I get to rub chocolatey sugar on my lips AND lick it off? Heaven on toast)

Asides from all the bargains (it was seriously a bargain hunters' wet dream in there), the fashion show was electrifying. It really reminded me how much I love fashion; the juxtaposition of the upbeat dancers decked out in nu-rave costumes and the stompy, leggy models decked out in couture gowns reminded me that fashion is such a mystery; both incredibly fun and also something to be in awe of.

Fashion for me is a major contradiction - something that is so accessible and yet something to be lusted, dreamt, salivated over. Fashion is everywhere - in your wardrobe, on the street, in the glossy magazines that you used to steal from your mum as a child and the glistening catwalks in Paris and Milan. Fashion is amazing in the fact that whether you're wearing Primark or Prada, you can make it look your own; you can make it yours.

It also inspired me to take some more risks with fashion - I have been playing it waaay too safe lately. So when I'm standing in front of my mirror getting dressed, instead of thinking "Will anyone laugh about this behind my back?" or "Will people think I'm weird if I wear this?", I might just go straight ahead and clash my colours or layer my clothes in some oddball way, wear too many necklaces or wear a summer dress in winter, and I urge you to do the same. Never let your clothes hide you or control you - wear what you want to wear and have fun! Life's too short to let your clothes dictate you

So yeah, an amazing day out for anyone who loves bargains, outfit studying, fashion on any level or free shit - I know that I will be booking my ticket for next year as soon as possible.

XOXO

Get Lowe

daisy lowe <3 by Ms M
All throughout my teenage life, I have never considered myself to be a lesbian, but at the moment, I am actually in love with a Ms Daisy Lowe. Courtney Love is like an angel to me; a dirty, smeared, bleached angel. Her baby doll dresses, her smeared red lipstick, her wild backcombed hair, her ripped black tights - her whole look just screams "you can look, but if you touch, I'll fucking have you!" Oh Courtney, you ferociously delicate rock-starlet.

The interview was so good as well; you can always count on Courtney never to shy away or do anything half arsed, so her answers were so raw and candid. The fact that it said that she bought gifts for everyone on the photo shoot melted my heart a bit, and that's not easy to do...

Dynamite issue of Elle, buy it if you can. There was a killer article about personal shoppers in the high street stores - aaaw an awesome career that would be! The only thing is that the girl was wearing a cute Thomas Burberry for Urban Outfitters dress that I saw on the Urban Outfitters website sale, fell in love with; only for it to be snapped up at the last minute. Every time I read that article now, my heart dies a little at what could have been

XOXO

Feels Like Kittens and Cuddles

One of the many things in this world make me feel accomplished: baking cookies that melt in your mouth, getting A's on my coursework and managing not to go over my £20 a month mobile phone budget; but the main thing is a good shopping trip. The feeling of truly getting your moneys worth and coming home with your shopping bags heaving with goodies...yuuuum - nothing quite like it.

Well, lucky for me, today's shopping trip just happened to be one of those times. Primark really came through for me. A gorgeous, smoky shade of grey, slightly baggy jumper (I love the slouchy, "I just stole this from my boyfriend's wardrobe" look) that fits perfectly which is a rare thing for mass produced garments. The kicker of this story? 100% cashmere. That's right folks. 100% cashmere jumper, only £20 from Primark. Yes, the same Primark that is home to cheap nylon dresses and an array of plain cotton tank tops. It's a real treat to find a good wardrobe treasure, but it's even better when you have to rummage and flick through rails of cheap black trousers to find it- make you really feel as though you earned it! The shop aside, tis oh-so-rare that one may find such a gem such as a cashmere jumper anywhere for the same price of a pizza takeout feast (and no lingering guilt in the morning) I was in my shopping element...

I also managed to pick up a very Audrey Hepburn-ish white striped, long sleeved top, some cute art-deco belts and some over-the-knee socks for the chilly months ahead. Oh Primark, how I love thee

And also some cute pale blue nail polish and some shower gel that's going to make me smell like a chocolate fudge brownies in the morning.

XOXO

Old Skool Like Opal Fruits

For the quadrillionth time today, someone told me to get Facebook. Barked it at me like some crazy order, and when I said no, they looked at me as though I had just killed a puppy (unnecessary imagery I know, but yeah, you get that the look I was given was less than amicable)

Why do people so insist on Facebook? I tried a Facebook account and I HATED it. Nothing about it appealed to me, it was not for me - the colours were dull, people I didn't even know added me because we had "friends in common" and the whole thing was just way too mind boggling. Now, this is not a rant at social networking sites because, lo and behold I am, and will always be, a Myspace whore. I love Myspace, it symbolises everything that is right with the world - friends, talking, photos...Tom.... So I don't quite know where my resentment Facebook stems from. People often tell me that Facebook is way superior, with all its whizzy gizzy little features, but for me, there will be room for only one social network site in my heart. Myspace.

I think it has something to do with the fact that the more popular Facebook becomes, the more kookish and kitsch Myspace becomes. Whenever I tell anyone that I have Myspace, I get the same squinty eye, screwed up face look; "Myspace?! Who has Myspace anymore?!!" But that just adds to its appeal. To me, Myspace is like having a typewriter when people are clicking away on their laptop keyboards. Its like carrying around a Pez dispenser when people are eating the latest Mars bar. Something about Myspace always seemed so terribly kitsch and individual, even the name appeals to me. Myspace. Whether it holds connotations of conversations with my year 11 crush or looking through photos of past parties, Myspace will always hold memories of my sweet teenage life

Plus Facebook is friggin hard to navigate, I'm a simple folk - sort it out Mr Facebook

XOXO

Discount Prada?

I'm an optimist, I like to dream and I am ever so slightly gullible, so when I read in a column in last month's Elle that a pair of Prada knickers were selling at TK Maxx (aka hell on earth) I was so happy that finally FINALLY I may actually own something designed by the sacred Miuccia Prada that I was more than happy to brave the crowds of that scary, scary shop.

So armed with my boyfriend (I needed someone to help me with the scarily violent discount shoppers...), my bargain hunting head and hope in my heart, we set off to TK Maxx.

As I said, I am an optimist... and that was my downfall. After all, nothing cheered me up more than flicking through past Elle magazines and reliving the Nu-rave trends of yore (never before have I so badly wanted to be a child of the 80's.)

I've been flirting with the idea for a while now, wondering whether or not I could pull off bright, screaming colours, but the sheer size of my now readily accessible colour palette (powder blue, lime green, yellow, pink, pillar box red, etc) more than won me over. Now that its winter, I think we could all benefit from a little colour lift-up. However there are downsides...

Wearing too bright clothes can sometimes make one look like an escaped 80's child-tv-presenter, unless you're a serial flasher or a go-go dancer bright underwear is a bit of a miss and I have a slight phobia of bright hair. Nail polish seemed to be the logical thing.

From yellow, to green to bright pink, I shall take inspiration from my pencil case and revamp my nails, old skool highlighter stylie (Perhaps I won't literally use highlighters because I did that once when I was bored in history class, turns out highlighter stains; I looked like I had a fungal infection for weeks.)

And if Nylon says its cool, then its cool - you dig?

Barry M rock my socks

XOXO
